Sandra Pralong

State Adviser - Department for the Relation with Romanians Abroad 

Sandra-Marylin-Andreea Pralong (born in 1958) has a PhD in political sciences with honours from the Institute of Political Science in Paris (2008) and is a graduate of three master’s programmes on marketing (Switzerland, HEC Lausanne, 1981), international relations and diplomacy (USA, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Boston, 1985) and political philosophy (USA, Columbia University, New York, 1997).

In 1990 Sandra Pralong returned to Romania from New York, where she was the Director of Promotions (communication B2B) of the international weekly Newsweek. In Bucharest she set up The Foundation for an Open Society which she directed in the early 90s. She was an adviser to President Emil Constantinescu (1998-2000) and an international civil servant with UNDP (2002-2006). Since 2007, through the SynergEtica Foundation which she founded, she has been urging Romania’s youth to experience “the joy of ethics” and to acknowledge that prosperity cannot be sustainable unless it is ethical. In 2008, the European Commission appointed her Goodwill Ambassador for The International Year of Intercultural Dialogue.  

She is active in civil society, as well as an author, teacher, consultant, trainer and coach. She is known in the diaspora for publishing books including De ce m-am întors în România (Why I returned to Romania) (Polirom, 2010)and Mai români decât românii? De ce se îndrăgostesc străinii de România (More Romanian than the Romanians?  Why foreigners fall in love with Romania) (Polirom, 2013), which plead for the need to rediscover the love for homeland. She has been active abroad since a teenager when, in 1975, she signed “The Memorandum of the Holloway” through which the exiled Romanian community demanded observance of human rights in Romania.

Sandra Pralong additionally published The Open Society after 50 Years—the Continuing Relevance of Karl Popper (Routledge, 1997) and Cu Schimbăm Mentalitatea? 25 de ani in România (How to change mindsets? 25 years in Romania) (Polirom, 2014), as well as numerous essays and scientific articles published in Romania and abroad.

She won international recognition for her work in communication and publicity, as well as in poetry. She was included in «Who’s Who in the World» and «Who’s Who of American Women», and was bestowed various medals by the Romanian state, the Royal House of Romania and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the USA.

Sandra Pralong was appointed State Adviser on August 27 2015.
