President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, on Tuesday, 27 August 2019, at the British part’s request, held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr. Boris Johnson. The two officials discussed mainly the relations between Romania and Great Britain, as well as aspects related to Great Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union.
With regard to the bilateral relations, President Klaus Iohannis pointed up that, after Brexit has been concluded, it will be important to update and deepen the strategic partnership between Romania and Great Britain, so that it includes both economic aspects and details related to security, defence and external relations.
On Brexit, the President of Romania stressed that an orderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union is beneficial both to Great Britain and to the Union. In this light, President Klaus Iohannis considered that the Withdrawal Agreement, concurred by the two sides, still remains the most efficient mechanism ensuring the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, as it limits the negative outcomes of Brexit and guarantees the rights of the Union’s citizens living, working or studying in Great Britain.
The President of Romania told Prime Minister Boris Johnson that our country’s top priority is to protect the rights of the Romanian citizens living in Great Britain. In this context, President Klaus Iohannis insisted that, also in the coming period, the citizens, both the Europeans living in Great Britain and the British living in the EU 27, have to be considered a priority so that, regardless of what the future negotiations will evolve, the negative outcomes that might affect their living standards to be reduced to a minimum.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave the President of Romania the assurance that protecting the rights of the Romanian citizens living in Great Britain after Brexit is a very important concern for the British Government and that the British authorities will prioritize this objective.
As regards the rights of the British citizens living in Romania, President Klaus Iohannis stressed that they will be protected also after Brexit, ensuring the reciprocity with the rights of the Romanian citizens living in Great Britain.
