Press statement by the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, on the situation in the Republic of Moldova

The attempt by The Party of Socialists of Republic of Moldova (PSRM), to bring down the Government led by Maia Sandu in a critical moment for the reform of the judiciary system, is aimed against the long-term interests of the Republic of Moldova and of its citizens.

In the five months that have passed since the Government led by Maia Sandu took over its mandate, important progress has been made in implementing the reforms required for Moldova to move closer to the European Union, to promote the values of democracy and the rule of law, in the fight against corruption and ensuring the independence of the judiciary system, as well as in the economic and social fields, such reforms aimed at rising the standards of prosperity and security for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

Moreover, the Maia Sandu Government has succeeded in restoring the trust of development partners, mainly the European Union’s trust, which is a key premise to relaunch the international political and financial support for the Republic of Moldova.

Romania has voiced its firm support for the efforts by the Government in Chișinău, as the Moldovan governmental coalition has clearly and resolutely committed to the European course and to advancing the bilateral Strategic Partnership for the Republic of Moldova’s European integration.

In the period before the motion of no-confidence, Romania, directly and in various ways, firmly called for the political forces in Chișinău to prove responsibility and to surpass the political deadlock and encouraged identifying a solution to ensure stability, to carry on the reform in Justice and to enable the Government to continue on the European course.

In the current context, Romania’s support, including the financial one, will continue to serve the interests of the citizens in the Republic of Moldova, will aim at fulfilling the bilateral strategic projects and will be strictly dependent on carrying on the key reforms for the democratic development of the Republic of Moldova and advancing its European course.
