President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, on 18-19 October, in Brussels, Belgium, took part in the works of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, under the theme „Global partners for global challenges”. President Klaus Iohannis delivered an address during the Summit’s first working session „Building the future together: Promoting inclusive growth and sustainable connectivity”.

The Summit brought together the 53 ASEM partners when interaction and interconnectivity between Europe and Asia is expanding.

On this occasion, a joint statement was adopted, entitled „Global Partners for Global Challenges”, in which the ASEM leaders tackled the opportunities and challenges for Europe and Asia in an accelerating changing world.

In his address, the President of Romania welcomed the over two decades of ASEM’s activity, consolidated through a multidimensional process of intra-regional and cooperation dialogue. Additionally, President Klaus Iohannis assured that Romania will continue to actively and responsibly promote the process of enhancing Europe-Asia cooperation, including during its Presidency of the European Union Council, a mandate to be taken over in the first semester of 2019.

Against this background, the President of Romania evoked that the set of conclusions of the „Connecting Europe and Asia - Building blocks for an EU strategy” Council adopted on 18 October, represent the proper grounds for an optimal political framework to boost connectivity between Europe and Asia, and further highlighted that developing this policy is a proof that promoting connectivity is part of the European Union’s enlargement and neighbourhood policies. Consequently, President Klaus Iohannis pointed up that this new strategic approach is applied for the first time by the European Union when relating to the Asian partner states, aiming at building enduring and sustainable connections with the latter.

The President of Romania stated that, for our country, the fairways on the Danube and at the Black Sea represent essential transportation corridors and he fostered their inclusion in the larger intra-regional transport networks and in the Europe-Asia networks.

Moreover, President Klaus Iohannis reminded of the multidimensional nature of connectivity processes, which are completed by education and by the people-to-people contacts between the two continents. Furthermore, he stressed that Romania pays the greatest attention to this dimension.

Related to this, the President of Romania pointed out that, in May next year, with the theme „Connecting education: inclusion, mobility and excellence in support of the Sustainable Development Goals”, our country will host a series of meetings within the ASEM Cooperation Framework - ASEM Education Ministers Meeting, the Students’ Forum and the Rectors of Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Conference.
